This is another in a line of books composed by Tolkien’s estate, taken from various notes, fragments, and other unfinished writings and molded into a coherent whole. Tolkien’s tales of Middle-Earth were what cemented him as one of my favorite writers, and I wanted to go back to Middle-Earth as part of this project.Fortunately, the publishing gods smiled upon me, and gave me Children of Hurin. Sure, I could have gone for Letters From Father Christmas, or Farmer Giles of Ham, but neither of those somehow felt right. I highly enjoyed reading The Children of Hurin. But for now, all I can say is that overall I found this book to be superb and I don't feel like I’m missing anything from what I’ve read here. It was really easy for me to feel like I was inside a dark myth of Middle-Earth when I was reading through this book.Picture: Glaurung by Alan LeeI have no idea whether finishing the ‘required’ reading would actually enhance or diminish my reading experience. The prose itself already offered a very atmospheric experience and Lee’s illustrations enhanced the immersive atmosphere even more.

In my opinion Tolkien is one of the foremost literary geniuses of the 20th century, a man who was creating a myth that was to spawn other myths and remain enduring hence my choice of subject for the dissertation.
Hand in hand with the love for anything Tolkien rose my interest into mythology and the fantastic, the classical fairy tale from childhood and the mystical. Since then I have explored Tolkien’s works thoroughly, expanding beyond The Lord of the Rings into his other books such as The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales amongst others. Tolkien’s fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings I was swept up into the mania surrounding anything fantasy. When I had first heard of Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of J.R.R.
